The unique “Canadian” horse breed. Visit Bill Humeny from just outside Saskatoon, SK. where he has a herd of 10 Canadian horses. This unique breed goes back to the 1600’s before Canada was even a country. They were sent to Quebec or New France by Louis XIV for new settlers in the area. About 75% of Canadian horses are black, standing 14 to 16 hands high and weighing between 900 and 1500 pounds. At one time there were as many as 160,000 in Canada with their numbers dropping to as low as 200 in recent years.
